History
Tesla Controls was founded in 2008 to solve the problem of energy waste across a number of areas. We observed that many rooms in buildings had lights left on overnight although there are a plethora of solutions that attempt to solve this problem. We started the company after talking to many customers who found the existing solutions inadequate and in need of an easy-to-install control system.

Derek Smith, CEO
Derek is an experienced entrepreneur and innovator, previously founding Awarepoint Corporation, the leading provider of Real Time Location Systems in healthcare. Derek also has extensive experience with wireless mesh networks and how to securely deploy them across large enterprises. He has consulted on wireless system design for the U.S. Navy, Texas Instruments, and a $2B vendor of children’s products. Derek holds over 10 patents on wireless technology and products with several more in process. Derek is a graduate of U.C. San Diego (B.S. in Electronic Engineering and B.A. in Theater) and SDSU (MBA).
